Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures

By Dr. Jim Greene

Plastic surgery is generally done to improve the appearance of a person. That is why it is also called cosmetic surgery or body contouring method. A person may not be happy with his body and may want to change it. He may have had a trauma, which has disfigured his body or a scar may have been left behind by an injury. There may even be unwanted wrinkles, fat deposits or loose skin on his body which he wants to change. In all these cases, plastic surgery is the answer. Under an experienced and able surgeon plastic surgery can improve even nature's sculpture of the human body.

There are several popular plastic surgery procedures. One of the most popular ones is the changes done to the face. The face is the most visible part of a person's body and he naturally wants it to be perfect, free of all imperfections, blemishes or scars. The forehead lines may be erased, drooping eyelids may be restructured, a broken nose may be mended, smaller lips made larger and huge ones reduced, the ears may be restructured, the neck may be contoured-all through plastic surgery.

Another important plastic surgery is performed to augment the breasts of a woman. She may want fuller and rounded breasts or she may want perfectly contoured ones; she may want sagging breasts lifted. The breast reconstruction is also an important and popular plastic surgery procedure. Many men may want embarrassingly large breast to be made smaller or they may want their chest wall to look manly. These are also popular plastic surgery procedures. Removal of unwanted fat through liposuction or through surgery also is a popular surgery. Fat on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks calves and upper arms can be removed by plastic surgery. Though liposuction may not strictly come under the category of plastic surgery, it is nevertheless an important part of it.

In almost all types of plastic surgery, incisions are made discreetly in the folds of the skin or in the hairline or in places, which are not easily visible. Then either the excess fat or skin is removed or the muscles restructured or the implant inserted strategically inside the wound, and then the whole thing is carefully sutured using fine stitches. Some of these stitches get absorbed into the body and some may be removed after eight or ten days leaving behind a better sculpted made to order body. The final structure depends on the skill of the surgeon, his experience and the method of plastic surgery used.
